Stars Flock to Royal Court Readings???
Date: 26 January 2006
[whatsonstage Gossip] It’s difficult keeping up with the number of stars flocking to Sloane Square to take part in the ten-week season of rehearsed readings as part of the Royal Court’s year-long 50th anniversary celebrations. 50 Readings, 50 Writers, 50 Years features some of the most famous plays from the theatre’s history. It kicked off in mid-January with John Osborne’s 1957 classic The Entertainer, in which Robert Lindsay (directed by David Hare, no less) played Archie Rice, the role originated on stage and screen by Laurence Olivier. Next week sees Julie Walters in Joe Orton’s 1967 double bill of The Ruffian on the Stair and The Erpingham Camp on Monday (30 January 2006), Matthew Macfadyen and Ben Whishaw in 1968’s Total Eclipse by Christopher Hampton on Tuesday (31 January) and Neil Morrissey in David Storey’s 1969 play In Celebration on Thursday (2 February). The readings, held in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, continue until 24 March 2005, when the season concludes with Conor McPherson’s 2004 drama Shining City.
