Helena gets the Nod for Blyton film
CRACK open the ginger beer — Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter is to play kids’ author Enid Blyton in a major new TV drama.

The BBC4 film will tell the story of the acclaimed writer of books like The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, Malory Towers and Noddy.

It is the first time Blyton’s life has been portrayed on the screen, say bosses.

Helena, 42, said: “It’s a long time since I have read such a well-written script with as complex and fascinating a character as Enid.”

BBC4 chief Richard Klein said: “Enid Blyton is loved across the world yet behind this positive image lies a darker story.”

The film, with Matthew Macfadyen as Enid’s first husband, is in production and will air this year.

The Guardian (5 mars 2009)
BBC4 commissions Enid Blyton biopic
Jolly good show! Stock up on the ham sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer – BBC4 has given the green light to a biopic of children's author Enid Blyton.

The corporation has confirmed that a single 90-minute drama charting the life of Blyton, creator of Noddy, the Famous Five, the Secret Seven and fantasies such as The Magic Faraway Tree will go into production shortly.

Carnival Film and Television will produce the drama, which is expected to air later this year or early next year. Producers are remaining tight-lipped on the casting.

BBC4 has enjoyed great success with one-off dramas on prominent British figures and the channel dominates the single drama category in this year's Royal Television Society awards, with two out of three nominations, for Margaret Thatcher – The Long Walk To Finchley and The Curse of Steptoe, about the stars of the sitcom, Wilfred Brambell and Harry H Corbett.

Carnival is run by former BBC drama executive Gareth Neame, who produced the drama series Harley Street and Whistleblowers for ITV, and its Blyton drama will follow those about Barbara Cartland, Mary Whitehouse and Fanny Cradock.

As with other recent BBC4 biopics such as those on the actor Kenneth Williams and the comedian Frankie Howerd, the Blyton drama is expected to focus on the bestselling author's troubled private life – which failed to resemble the jolly plots of her books.

This included her divorce from her first husband and how she suffered from the rows and the break-up of her parents.

"I think her approach to life was quite childlike and she could also sometimes be almost spiteful like a teenager," her daughter, Imogen Smallwood, said in a radio interview last year when discussing how the author was affected by her father abandoning his young family.

"[Blyton's biographer] Barbara Stoney suggested the trauma she suffered around about her 13th birthday was so huge that a lot of her emotional development just froze there and I think this is a very good way of looking at her," Smallwood said.

In Blyton's books, many of the characters were fatherless and in her 1989 biography of Blyton, Smallwood described her mother as an "emotionally crippled" woman.

The professional career of Blyton, once described as a "one-woman fiction machine", was hugely successful.

Born in 1897, Blyton's literary output was an estimated 800 books over roughly 40 years including books for very young children, such as Noddy.

But she is best known for her young readers' novels, where children embark on their own adventures with minimal adult help – such as the 21 Famous Five novels.

It was said that she wrote up to 10,000 words a day until she was afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease a few years before her death, aged 71, in 1968.

An estimated 400m copies of her books have been sold worldwide and she is the sixth most translated author in history.

Et voici le communiqué officiel de la BBC. Very Happy
Helena Bonham Carter to star as Enid Blyton on BBC Four
Date: 07.03.2009
Category: TV Drama; BBC Four

Acclaimed actress Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd) leads the cast in Enid Blyton (working title), a major one-off drama from Carnival Film & Television for BBC Four. Matthew Macfadyen and Denis Lawson also star.

Helena Bonham Carter says: "It's a long time since I have read such a well written script with as complex and fascinating a character as Enid. I hope I do her justice. And I hope I get to drink lashings of Ginger Beer."

One of the most recognised storytellers of all time, Enid Blyton's charming characters and classic tales have enchanted countless generations of children all over the world for almost 80 years.

Having sold over 500 million books in 40 countries, this one-off drama follows the woman behind the enduring and compelling stories such as the beloved Famous Five, Secret Seven, Malory Towers and Noddy series.

Richard Klein, Controller, BBC Four, says: "I am delighted that Helena has agreed to play this role. Enid Blyton is loved across the world as one of the greatest children's storytellers. And yet behind this positive image lies a darker and more conflicted story. I know that Helena will employ all her renowned skills as an actress to bring this story to life."

Born at the close of the nineteenth century, on the August 11, 1897, Blyton's life and career spanned a time of enormous social and cultural change. The film will shed light on the ambitious and driven – but as yet unpublished – young woman, from the development of her rich imagination against the adversity of an imperfect childhood, two World Wars, and a first marriage ending in divorce – to household name.

It will explore how the orderly, reassuringly clear worlds she created within her stories contrasted with the complexity of her own personal life.

Sally Woodward Gentle, Executive Producer, Carnival, says: "We are so excited to be embarking on this Enid Blyton adventure with such a brilliant cast and magnificent crew. Enid Blyton demonstrates Carnival's continued commitment to distinctive, original and authored drama."

Key cast also include: Matthew Macfadyen (Frost/Nixon, Little Dorrit) as Hugh Pollock, Blyton's publisher and first husband, and father of her two daughters Gillian and Imogen. Denis Lawson (Bleak House) plays Kenneth Darrell Waters, a London surgeon who becomes Blyton's second husband following her divorce from Pollock.

Ben Stephenson, BBC Controller Drama Commissioning, adds: "The works of Enid Blyton remain a major part of our national psyche and it feels fitting that we tell Enid's story dramatically for the first time ever on screen, continuing BBC Four's commitment to reflecting Britain's cultural life after the RTS nominated Steptoe and Long Walk to Finchley. As befits an icon of our time we are completely thrilled to have the glorious Helena Bonham Carter make her debut on BBC Four."

Currently in production for transmission later this year, Enid Blyton is a one-off drama made by Carnival Films for BBC Four, written by Lindsay Shapero.

The director is James Hawes (The 39 Steps, Miss Marie Lloyd: Queen Of The Music Hall), and producer is Lee Morris (My Zinc Bed; The Damned United).

The executive producer at Carnival Film & Television is Sally Woodward Gentle (The Ruby In The Smoke; Whitechapel; Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa!).

BBC executive producers are Eleanor Moran and Jamie Laurenson.

Enid Blyton was commissioned by Ben Stephenson and Richard Klein, and is the latest drama commission for BBC Four which also includes The Curse Of Comedy season; Marie Lloyd, Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk To Finchley, Barbara Cartland, Fanny Hill and Crooked House. The popular drama series Mad Men continues on Tuesday nights on BBC Four.

Nouvelle critique d'Ian Wylie dans sa chronique "The Life of Wylie" du Manchester Evening News d'aujourd'hui : Enid: Helena Bonham Carter.
FANS of Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter waited patiently on the pavement outside BAFTA in London last night.

Inside a lucky few hundred of us were treated to the world premiere of the brilliant new BBC4 drama Enid.

Followed by an on-stage Q&A with Helena and the production team.

The one-off 90-minute drama about the life of Enid Blyton is superb.

As is Helena’s extraordinary portrayal of the author who brought us Noddy, The Famous Five and so much more.

Still selling eight million copies of her works every year – over 40 years after her death.

The BBC attracts plenty of critics.

But not many broadcasters in the world can bring us TV films of such astonishing quality like this.

All filmed in something like 14 days.

Lashings of praise should go to all involved.

Earlier this year I interviewed Helena plus screen husbands Matthew Macfadyen and Denis Lawson.

Those interviews are still under embargo ahead of the BBC screening this autumn.

But I can give a taste from last night’s premiere.

“She was bonkers, really,” joked Helena, who watched just the final 10 minutes of the film.

Before explaining how the drama aimed to capture the essence of Enid Blyton and how she was addicted to escapism.

“She’s just an amazing character. She was barking, she was a mess emotionally, and yet extraordinarily efficient.

“She was a phenomenon in her output, how much she wrote.

“She was so traumatised by her father leaving her when she was 13, that she got stuck there and she didn’t really grow beyond 13.

“She was like Forever Child.”

Which, as it turns out, was an early suggestion for the title of the film.

Lovers of Blyton need not fear a hatchet job.

With the majority of the film depicting her family life at “Green Hedges” – the Blyton home in Beaconsfield.

Executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle stressed: “This is just one point of view – ultimately it’s a drama.”

As one member of the audience commented after the screening: “There’d be gasps as she said or did something particularly outrageous.

“And yet you never quite lost sympathy with her because you could sort of see what was underneath all this.”

Enid’s surviving youngest daughter Imogen has seen the drama three times and is said to think it’s “a great film”.

Imogen as a little girl is played by young Outnumbered actress Ramona Marquez.

Who gives yet another remarkable – and moving – performance.

Former Spooks star Matthew Macfadyen, complete with moustache, is dashing as Enid’s first husband Hugh Pollock.

He further cements his acting reputation as we see him both in striped pyjamas and the uniform of The Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Also singing along to the Flanagan and Allen song Run Rabbit Run.

Matthew is next on screen in another terrific BBC TV drama – Criminal Justice.

Alongside Denis Lawson, who plays Enid’s second husband Kenneth Waters – another pitch-perfect performance.

Joseph Millson also appears briefly but makes his usual mark in a memorable scene.

I’m always wary of giving too much acclaim to a TV production just hours after watching it.

Especially when I’ve had the privilege of seeing it on a big screen.

But I believe this is a film you will want to dig out again years from now, and enjoy all over again.

Helena said she loved having to work against a tight deadline.

“Acting on film is so boring a lot of the time because you’re waiting for everybody else.

“On Harry Potter…I really love doing it, but often there’s like half an hour between each take and there’s a social cocktail party.”

Adding: “I do my best acting when I don’t have much time.”

As BBC Controller of Drama Ben Stephenson last night:

“It is truly incredible to have an actress of her calibre on BBC4.

“And she is truly incredible in the film.”
