Voici le synopsis du film communiqué par Universal Studios (voir ici).
UNTITLED ROBIN HOOD ADVENTURE May 14, 2010

Genre: Action-Adventure

Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Léa Seydoux, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, Alan Doyle, Danny Huston and Max von Sydow

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Writers: Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris, Brian Helgeland, Paul Webb, Tom Stoppard

Oscar winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as “Robin Hood,” whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar winner Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

A look at the forthcoming releases in 2010! (411mania.com, 10 décembre 2009).
Ridley Scott'sfilm about Robin Hood had been long rumoured. The original piece was entitled "Nottingham" and made the Sheriff of Nottingham out to be the hero of the piece. The policeman upholding the law while the outlaw Hood robbed from the good citizens. When Ridley Scott came onboard that all changed and the script was re-written by Brian Helgeland to make Nottingham "conflicted" rather than good or evil. There was an idea flying around that Russell Crowe would play both Robin Hood and Nottingham. Thus giving Nottingham a certain sympathy but in the end Matthew Macfadyen was cast as Nottingham. That concerns me. I think Nottingham will end up being very much the bad guy. Meanwhile Russell Crowe at 45 is a little old to be playing Robin Hood. Traditionally it's a younger man's role. Costner was only 36 when he portrayed Robin Hood in Prince of Thieves. That and Ridley Scott's record of late isn't what it should be. Body of Lies was at times very unremarkable and American Gangster wasn't the blowaway home run it should have been. And Robin Hood is a territory often explored. How will Ridley Scott's version differentiate itself from previous entries? The original concept seemed like a genius move but obviously the studios got nervous. Like when they asked Ridley Scott to take over the Alien prequel, which is slated for 2011.

Like with Gladiator RC and RS revive a genre which was presumed that it is lost.
Even now, they bring a great legend back impressively to the screen. More realistic, more passionate and with more action than we have ever seen Robin Hood. A medieval thriller, an intriguing love story and a rousing adventure epic - ROBIN HOOD.

The hottest film tickets of the year (The Sunday Times, 10 janvier 2010).
Robin Hood

“My name is Robin of Huntington, commander of the armies of the forest, loyal servant to the true king, Richard the Lionheart, and I will have my screentime, in this multiplex and the next.” The Gladiator undertones will be hard to miss in Ridley Scott’s latest, with Russell Crowe as another vengeful warrior (equipped with bow and arrow this time), returning from a faraway campaign (here, the Crusades), deprived of his noble status, separated from his beautiful beloved (Cate Blanchett as Marian) and sparring with a psycho (Matthew MacFadyen’s Sheriff of Nottingham). All this and Eileen Atkins as Eleanor of Aquitaine too. Can’t wait. May 14

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Eight (Dark Horizons, 2 janvier 2010).
Robin Hood
Opens: May 14th 2010

Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Matthew Macfadyen, William Hurt
Director: Ridley Scott

Summary: In 13th century England, a former archer in the late King Richard's army assembles a band of marauders to confront corruption in the local town of Nottingham and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.

Analysis: Originally conceived back in 2007, "Nottingham" proposed the interesting and ambitious idea of a love triangle between Maid Marian, a more sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham and a less than virtuous Robin Hood. It was that idea that Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott initially signed up for, and then Scott brought in Brian Helgeland to re-write the script to elaborate on Crowe's wrongly maligned Sheriff character.

Then the writer's strike put everything on hold until a planned shoot mid-2008. A further near year-long delay ensued with more script rewrites playing up the idea of Crowe as both Robin and the Sheriff (Hood briefly takes over the Sheriff's identity when the latter is killed in the film's opening). Ultimately though the story reverted to the classic mold with Robin (Crowe) becoming an outlaw to stop the despotic Sheriff, a role finally filled by "Spooks" and "Pride & Prejudice" star Matthew Macfadyen.

Scott's aim is to deliver a definitive version of the tale as he's vocally not been a fan of any of the previous multitudes of adaptations from the 1938 Errol Flynn film and 1991's Kevin Costner-led 'Prince of Thieves' to the recent family-targeted BBC TV series production. In fact Mel Brooks' "Men in Tights" seemed to be the only one Scott didn't mind due to its comedy value. With his 'Hood' though, the aim seems to be to deliver a serious epic blockbuster with a realistic historical tone like he did with 2000's "Gladiator" and 2005's "Kingdom of Heaven".

He may not have liked the earlier films, but there has been so many incarnations of "Robin Hood" that quite frankly one has to wonder what's the point? Admittedly the production values will be brilliant (as demonstrated in the trailer), Scott can make films like this in his sleep, and the casting is spectacular with the only previous weak link, Sienna Miller, having been replaced by the more appropriate and talented Cate Blanchett.

Yet one can't help but get the feeling that sheer overfamiliarity could hamper its critical and box-office potential. Certainly the idea of another 'Hood' movie isn't something that makes one want to rush out to the cinema, especially one that's opening early Summer and is upfront about taking its material very seriously. On the other hand considering the product also set for release over that period, Scott's work could be one of the few thinking adult-friendly options out there amidst a sea of sequels, remakes and adaptations aimed generally at teenagers.

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood Will NOT Be Going 3D - Updated (First Showing, 11 janvier 2010).
Update: I was just informed by a Universal rep that this entire story is actually false and that Robin Hood will NOT be going 3D. Who knows whether they're just saying that and will later announce that it's going 3D, but oh well. For now, it sounds like it's not happening, and Robin Hood will remain 2D. Crisis averted!

King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham actually look alike, and there was an expectation that Sheriff would play some crucial role, however he does not. Other then hitting on Lady Marian and acting like a buffoon, his screen time is very limited.
