Kim Cattrall on how her new TV role indulged her love of 50s style

Kim Cattrall on how her new TV role indulged her love of 50s style (Daily Record, 20 novembre 2010).
Nov 20 2010 Jack Jonson

SHE'S best known for playing the maneater in Sex and The City so it must have been a refreshing change for Kim Cattrall when she signed up for new Channel 4 drama Any Human Heart to play... a maneater.

The 54-year-old Liverpudlian appears in the adaptation of the William Boyd novel which tells the extraordinary story of fictional writer Logan Gonzago Mountstuart's ordinary life.

Played during three stages in his life by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen and newcomer Sam Claflin, the drama covers a life lived to the full and a myriad of historical events seen through the eyes of one man.

The much admired Broadbent plays the fictional writer through his final years - London in the 70s and 80s, the abject shame of poverty, unlikely heroism and his not-so-serene old age in 90s rural France.

As a younger man, Boyd's fictional character also had an eye for the ladies, whether he - or they - were married or not.

And one of those ladies is played by one of TV's most notorious sexual predators.

But Kim admits she loved the character every bit as much as her Sex and the City alter-ego.

She said: "There's something quite glorious about Gloria. She's lives in the moment and she enjoys life to the full.

"There's something unexpected about her when she meets Logan. He's taken by surprise by this very strong, headstrong spirit.

"It was unheard of at the time, the 1950s, for a woman to initiate an affair with a man. There's something quite alluring, strong, very fun and inspirational about her.

"She goes with her instincts. She sees this man who intrigues her and she just goes for him. I like the fact she lives in the moment."

In contrast to her famous SATC character, Kim is, in reality, and certainly when meeting the press, very different from her alter-ego.

Softly spoken and reluctant to maintain eye contact, she comes across almost as a timid creature and not at all the red-blooded vixen of her screen presence.

She admits she has nothing in common with such characters. "There's nothing I dislike about her and a lot I liked," she says.

"But I am very different from the character. I'm drawn to strong roles and she has a lot of strength. She's very mercurial in her own way. I'm drawn to her because she's larger than life, she likes to love them and leave them and she embraces the moment but is very realistic.

"She's quite European in her thoughts, in that she thinks she can be married but still fool around with his best friend. They understand it's not going to end anywhere definite.

"It's quite sophisticated in itself. She is aware of the limitations, respect and the boundaries of how far it will go."

Kim admits she loves the script of Any Human Heart because it also gave her the chance to indulge her love of clothes.

She says: "My mother was a young girl in the 50s and would talk about all these designers, like Balenciaga, when I was growing up. She had worked in a department store and done some modelling as a young woman.

"So I had an image of that look in my mind and it was a very voluptuous womanly look at that time. Pinched-in waist, the broad shoulder, the full body, and the skirt that ares out - very feminine, strong shapes and we worked hard at each tting to bring that authenticity.

"The designer was terrific. She let me have a lot of input and also being a redhead was really fun. It specifically said Gloria is a redhead and she's fiery so we worked out what colours would be good with that hair colour alongside the make-up of the time.

"Then going into the 60s was a different look again because I saw Gloria as very much into style and fashion as a representation of who she is. Part of her allure and attraction is she knows how to dress. She was very cultured, very smart.

She has that lifestyle which has this grandness to it. "She would wear the most chic, most fabulous things of that time period.

She would have the Hermes bag, the Chanel suit, the Cartier necklace or watch, whatever it was that was of the moment."

The role also meant a double header for Kim, pairing her with Spooks star Matthew Macfadyen in the mornings and afternoons, and again in the evenings when the pair met up on stage while performing Private Lives in London's West End.

She says: "At the time, Matthew was my leading man in Private Lives and had already signed on to do the project. I felt Matthew and I had a really good relationship on stage and that would translate really well to play opposite him in a romantic lead on film. And it did. We would film from early in the morning to 2.30pm and then I would have a quick nap, eat, and it was time to go on stage as Amanda in Private Lives with him as my Elliot. It was like a double life for a while which I really enjoyed as I adore Matthew."

Matthew agreed, saying: "Kim's great and good fun. It was lovely to work together at the same time. It was so wonderful having such a brilliant cast - such a treat. You'd be on set every day and there'd be these brilliant actors coming in for a day or two, ying in and being just brilliant."

And he admits the character, while being fictional, should be one that many viewers will relate to.

He says: "Logan can be a womaniser. He drinks and smokes too much and all that kind of stun. He's awed in the way that he's selfish, petty and vain, and he cheats. But he deals with everything like all of us, so he's rounded and human. Reading him, I was very comforted by the story of his life and you think - 'I'm not alone'. We are all struggling to find happiness and meaning in life and he's no exception. He has terrible, dreadful tragedies but has wonderful highs as well."
