Keira Knightley admits 'Anna Karenina' is the hardest thing she's ever done (Hitfix, 20 juin 2012).
I also took a few minutes to ask Knightley about "Anna Karenina," her third film with Wright after "Pride and Prejudice" (for which she received her first and only Oscar nod to date) and "Atonement" (a best picture nominee). The intriguing cast includes Aaron Johnson, Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Holliday Grainger ("The Borgias") and Ruth Wilson ("Luther"). The film is on everyone's awards season radar because of it's prime early Nov. release date and the prestige reputation of the cast and filmmaker. Of course, adapting Tolstoy to the big screen is hardly easy, but it was still a surprise when Knightley told me playing the title character was the hardest part she'd ever had.
"It was amazing. It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done. In a brilliant way, in a brilliant way," Knightley says. "Obviously, Tolstoy was a genius and I think the reason that his books last so well -- is because the yard so complex and it's really looking at the best of humanity and the worst of humanity, often in one character. And trying to balance all those things in the one person was really hard. And, hopefully it's worked."
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Aaron Johnson s'étant marié hier et ayant changé de nom dans la foulée, le générique de bande-annonce, dans sa version britannique, a été corrigé le jour même (voir ici). Ce que c'est qu'un contrat d'artiste !

Do you still train?
"Only, like, Pilates and yoga, but I actually went back and did some classes for Anna Karenina. Joe decided to work with Sidi Larbi [Cherkaoui], one of the most inspiring choreographers right now, and we went away to Amsterdam and worked. I was able to actually combine dance and acting, which was a dream come true."
I read that you filmed in northern Russia in quite extreme conditions.
"Yeah, it was 38 below and there were, like, dozens of wolves. We weren't allowed to go out after seven. It even said on the call sheet, because there had been an accident the day before: 'Beware, wolves are known to attack lone humans [laughs].'"

Jude Law, divin dandy (Figaro Madame, 18 mars 2012).

Come entriamo, usciamo, sopravviviamo all’amore, gli approcci differenti all’amore, considerato lussuria animalesca o dono di dio. Tolstoi riesce a maneggiare perfettamente ciascun elemento».

Anna Karenina. La distribution
Cover Interviews : Kelly Macdonald (Red, 1° août 2012)
...Then, next month, an all-star adaptation of Anna Karenina arrives in cinemas, with Macdonald starring alongside Keira Knightley, as the long-suffering Dolly Oblonsky...
...Keira Knightley is the high-society heroine, Anna, Jude Law plays her husband, Alexei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson her young lover, count Vronsky. Though Macdonald was keen to be involved in such a prestigious project, she admits, with refreshing honesty, that her role – of Dolly Oblonsky – thrilled her rather less. ‘She’s such a misery; always crying and pregnant,’ she smiles wryly, rolling her eyes as she tucks into a very British breakfast of boiled eggs and soldiers with a cup of PG Tips.
‘But I really wanted to work with Joe Wright [the director of Atonement] I don’t have a plan or a goal – I’m just not that ruthless about things.’...
Matthew Macfadyen, who plays Dolly’s corrupt husband, Stiva Oblonsky, was a major source of mirth. ‘I couldn’t look at him without giggling, because he just looked like a big daft dog,’ she laughs. ‘He has all this silly facial hair, and is always looking apologetically at dolly because he’s screwed up again and been caught with another woman, or whatever. I had never worked with Keira before, and she’s totally incredible,’ she continues, sounding just a tiny bit star struck.

Tannishtha takes on the world (The Pioneer, 3 août 2012)
The actress is featuring in Joe Wright lavish international production of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, which releases in November ...
The film[Dekh Indian Circus] screened at Cannes. Tannishta, whose earlier films featured at the festival, but were not as talked about as this year’s lot, was busy wrapping up dubbing for Anna Karenina. It’s Joe Wright’s lavish production of Tolstoy’s classic novel, starring Keira Knightly in the lead.
Aaron Taylor Johnson is Count Vronsky, and Jude Law is Karenina’s husband. The actress, based between London and Mumbai, plays a gipsy in this opulent movie. She is the wife of one of the characters...
It was written in the press, that most of the action is centralised around one large hall.
Chatterjee explained, “its a movie costing millions of dollars, shot on a Universal Studio lot, for reasons related to structure, I can’t share now. But some sequences happen like they are on a stage.”
Anoushka Shankar, the sitarist, who is married to Wright, is not involved in the music of the movie ...
“In fact, the best part about working with its crew, is that nearly everyone from costume-designers to make-up artists and technicians, have several BAFTA’s and Oscars between them.” Incidentally, Chatterjee, who sings is featured on Anna Karenina’s soundtrack.

(Sans autre source)Kelly Macdonald calls onscreen husband Matthew Macfadyen a ‘hoot’ in the role of Oblonsky, Anna’s brother.
“He’s played Oblonsky in just the right way: charismatic, frustrating, lovable – and selfishly addicted to passion.”

AK - Domhnall Gleeson
Domhnall Gleeson: 'Handsome is not really where I'm at' (The Guardian, 16 août 2012)
The Irish writer-director Tom Hall, who cast Gleeson in Sensation as a rural lad turned ponytailed pimp, agrees with the actor's assessment of himself.
"Domhnall has a very mutable quality," he explains. "He can look really beautiful on screen one minute and really alarming the next. It makes him very versatile. He gets offered lots of cowards, creeps and sex pests, but he's also an appealing and unconventional romantic lead."
Gleeson will shortly be seen in two new and dissimilar adaptations: the science-fiction thriller Dredd ("It's kinda great and pretty full-on," he enthuses), based on the 2000AD comic strip, and Joe Wright's lush adaptation of Anna Karenina. In the former, he is a computer whizz whose eyes have been replaced by cameras; in the latter he plays the impassioned nobleman (and Tolstoy surrogate) Levin from behind a copper-wire beard. This month, he also appears in Shadow Dancer as Connor, an IRA soldier whose sister (Andrea Riseborough) turns informant. With his furtive eyes and ghostly pallor, Connor has been shaped and calcified by vengeance, and Gleeson uses the few scenes he has to make him achingly real.

Anna Karenina: Keira Knightley is reunited with Atonement director Joe Wright for the latest adaptation of Tolstoy's tragic heroine (Belfast Telegraph, 29 août 2012).
Tannishtha Chatterjee
Going places ! (thehindu.com, 30 August 2012)
While Kiera Knightly is Anna, Tannishtha is playing Masha, the beleaguered female companion of Nicholas. “Initially, in the script it was quite substantial but in the version that I saw recently in London, it has come down quite a bit. Still I have a song and it is quite unique.”
Shot in London and Russia, the film has a period setting but a contemporary zing to it, says Tannishtha. “It deals with different layers of a love story. There is debauched love story, there is a pure love story… then there is a love story with a class conflict of which I am a part.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson: a star from nowhere (The Observer, 2 septembre 2012)
Wright's Anna Karenina is an undeniably ambitious reading of a classic – part costume drama, part self-conscious take on the tropes of that genre. It is beautifully shot, immaculately choreographed, and sharply scripted by Tom Stoppard. The show is stolen by Domhnall Gleeson (son of Brendan) but Aaron holds his own as a character who, like everyone else, is caught up in the bigger drama that is Anna.

Who IS that 'blond poodle' kissing Keira Knightley? Fans criticise adaptation of Anna Karenina that gives dark hero an ‘X Factor makeover’ (mailonline, 2 septembre 2012)
Some academics have wondered if the makeover of Vronsky is part of an attempt to tap into some of the deeper themes of the novel.
Professor Andy Kaufman, a Tolstoy expert at the University of Virginia, said: ‘One of Tolstoy’s themes is the conflict between Russian values and Western values, and there’s the idea that Vronsky, as a Westernised, particularly Germanised, Russian would be an outsider, and his having blond hair could be a way of demonstrating that.
But Tolstoy biographer Professor Anthony Briggs said: ‘I can’t see any point or justification in giving him a kind of Nordic hairdo.’
