An epic story is embarked upon by an epic cast in the much-anticipated adaptation of William Boyd’s best-selling novel, Any Human Heart, for Channel 4. The four-part drama is led by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (Iris, Longford), Matthew Macfadyen (Frost/Nixon, Criminal Justice), and newcomer Sam Clafin, who all take on the role of writer Logan Mountstuart at different stages of his ordinary and yet extraordinary life. A life which spans every decade of the twentieth century.
From the idealism and naivety of Logan’s student years at Oxford, to love and heartache, the birth of his first child, scandal in the New York art scene in the ‘50s and ‘60s, to the horrors of war; Logan’s life and loves intertwine with a myriad of historical events and figures, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ernest Hemingway and Ian Fleming, to produce an exceptional portrait seen through the eyes of one man.
Kim Cattrall, Gillian Anderson, Tom Hollander, Natasha Little, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Ed Stoppard and Samuel West are amongst the star-studded cast. Michael Samuels (The Curse of Steptoe, Mrs Mandela) will direct. Lynn Horsford (Boy A, The Mark Of Cain) and Lee Morris (Enid, My Zinc Bed, The Damned United) will produce, with Sally Woodward Gentle (Enid, Whitechapel) as executive producer for Carnival Films.

Episode 2The story begins with Logan, played by Jim Broadbent, an old man in his 80s who, having suffered a heart attack, begins to put his life in order. On going through his diaries he is taken back to his 1920s university days with best friends Peter Scabius and Ben Leeping. The boys are all intent on losing their virginity and place a bet on who will succeed first.
Peter is confident he has found the right girl when he falls for Tess, and Logan takes up with political student Land Fothergill, but loyalties are put to the test when the young Logan has an affair with Tess.
An aspiring writer, Logan is determined to pursue his chosen career after a chance meeting with the charismatic Ernest Hemingway. His first novel is a success and Logan finds himself an agent. But on the rebound from being rejected by Land, he embarks on a whirlwind affair with Lady Lottie Casell and marries her.
Logan soon tires of his role as a society husband and accepts an offer of a journalistic job in Portugal where he meets a beautiful journalist called Freya. They instantly click and as the world prepares for war, Logan is left with a difficult decision - a life with his wife Lottie, or his true love, Freya.
Following an assignment in Portugal, Logan Mountstuart finds himself working as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War where he meets Hemingway again. Shocked by the brutality of war, Logan realises he must make a choice between Freya and Lottie. Logan's return to England heralds a new start.
Meanwhile, Tess and Peter's marriage is falling apart and despite Logan's intervention he doesn't manage to convince Peter to make it work and tragedy ensues.
Impressed with his reporting on the War, Ian Fleming recruits Logan as a British agent where he travels to Portugal to keep an eye on the Duke and Duchess of Windsor who have been flirting with the Nazis.
Logan's next assignment takes him to the Bahamas to keep tabs on the couple. However, not long into his stay he is embroiled in the murder investigation of Harry Oakes. Logan suspects something sinister is afoot and realises he should not have made enemies of the Duke and Duchess.
Finally, Logan travels to Switzerland, where he is required to pose as a Uruguayan businessman in order to trap escaping Nazis, but upon landing, he is immediately arrested and put into solitary confinement. The days pass with no news but finally, in 1945, he is released to discover the war is over. On his return back home he is faced with tragic news, something that will surely change Logan's life forever.

Episode 2Logan Mountstuart is a student at Oxford in the 1920s, aspiring to become a great novelist but even more desperate to lose his virginity.
Seemingly trapped by a promise to his dying father to join the family corned beef company, a chance encounter with Ernest Hemingway re-ignites his literary passion.
But when true love really does hit him, how will Logan cope when faced with the fact that life is random and uncontrollable?
Episode 3Working as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War, Logan confides in Hemingway, knowing he must make decisions about Freya and Lottie.
With the outbreak of WWII, Logan is recruited as a British Agent by Ian Fleming. Foreign assignments lead to encounters with the formidable Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Although the world is in turmoil, Logan's domestic life is bliss. Freya and Stella, their daughter, are thriving and it seems at last that Logan understands the meaning of true love.
Episode 4Following a failed suicide attempt after the tragic deaths of Freya and Stella, Logan has found success in the art world of New York where he is remarried to Allanah.
On the surface he seems to have the perfect life with Allanah and her young daughter, but he can't come to terms with his loss and the sudden death of his mother takes him back to London where he buys a flat in Pimlico and meets Peter's third wife Gloria.
Logan recovers from his accident and is released from hospital, but times are hard for him and he has to be resourceful in an attempt to live what remains of his life to the full.
For a time he earns a small wage working with an anti-fascist organisation until he discovers that they are rather too closedly connected to the Baader-Meinhof group.
Restless and unhappy in London, Logan decides to move to France where he has inherited a house from his friend Cyprien Dieudonne.
French life suits him and he quickly adapts to become part of the community. It isn't long before Logan's romantic interests also take a turn for the better with the arrival of a new neighbour, Madame Gabrielle Dupetit.

- Mais je t'avouerai que, pour ma part, je n'ai pas du tout la religion des captures d'écran à outrance : c'est tellement mieux de regarder directement le film. Les stills, c'est autre chose : il y a un photographe derrière.
