Dear friends, I'm sorry you have been kept in suspense for so long, but I'm afraid my hands have been somewhat tied whilst all the small details have been ironed out..but I'm delighted to say I can now officially share with you that Ripper St is going to a third series! And we start filming in May. I'm sure you will soon be able to read about the details, but in short I believe that the BBC have done a deal with Amazon Prime, who will finance most of the show in exchange for streaming the whole series online before the BBC show it. Its wonderful news, and I want to thank you all for being such a huge part in getting the show back after what felt like a premature death. So congratulations all of you! I know everyone involved is keen to make it even better than the 1st two series, and I really do believe we can do that...thank you again and catch you soon with another important post! The third season of the period drama will go into production under the helm of Amazon Prime Instant Video on May 12, and due to tighter budgets the opening two weeks of the four-month shoot will take place in London.

But the London-based thriller will touch down on Irish soil on May 26 and an insider told the Herald, that cast and crew will be based in the capital until mid August.

The third series of the Victorian-era detective drama will be available to watch online from November 14 with new episodes released every Friday

Ripper Street Series Three will see the return of the notorious H Division, the police precinct charged with keeping order on the meanest streets imaginable: late Victorian Whitechapel.

Once again starring Matthew Macfadyen (Spooks, Robin Hood) as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg (Alcatraz) as Captain Homer Jackson, MyAnna Buring (The Descent, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II) as Long Susan, and created by BAFTA nominated Richard Warlow, (Waking the Dead, Mistresses), the third series promises to be an even more vivid, sensual and violent drama that explores the lives of those who have seen the worst of humankind, but who nonetheless struggle each day to bring law to the lawless.

The series was commissioned by Amazon after legions of Ripper Street fans petitioned for its return and will include exclusive scenes that will not be shown on the BBC. A double bill of the first and second episodes will be available for Amazon Prime Instant Video members on Friday 14th November, with a further six episodes to be released weekly every Friday. The series will culminate in a series finale to be released on Boxing Day, Friday 26 December.

Matthew Macfadyen is set to kill off his Ripper Street character – so he can become a house-husband.

With his wife Keeley Hawes filming a three-part TV adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s novel The Casual Vacancy, Matthew, 39, wants his role as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid in Ripper Street to end.

Friends say he will spend more time with the couple’s children – Maggie, ten, Ralph, eight, and Keeley’s 14-year-old son Myles.

A pal says: ‘Matthew asked producers for his character to be killed off. He’s leaving on amicable terms.

'He’s been away filming a lot and he and Keeley take their acting roles in turn so the other can look after the kids.’

Amazon Prime Instant Video has revealed that its customers still want to consume content in a traditional way, and restated that its doors remain open to pitches from UK indies.

The subscription video-on-demand service will schedule the third series of Ripper Street, its first UK commission, once a week, on Fridays at 9pm. The period crime drama will launch with a double bill on 14 November.

The strategy contrasts with its rival Netflix, which makes full series available in one go. This has allowed users to binge-view original shows such as House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black.

Amazon Prime took the scheduling decision after conducting customer research. UK film and TV strategy director Chris Bird said: “We see Ripper Street as appointment-to-view television.

Customers are excited to make Sunday night viewing or Monday night viewing their habit, and we’re following that.”

Bird added that any decision to repeat the scheduling strategy would depend on the success of Ripper Street and the nature of the content commissioned. He explained that Ripper Street, which is co-produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point, was ordered following strong DVD sales of the series on Amazon and anger over BBC1’s decision to axe the drama.

“Taking action upon customer feedback is at the core of the company, and this is very much the case with our content acquisitions and commissioning decisions,” Bird told Broadcast.

He confirmed that Amazon was “open for business” and ready to receive ideas from UK production companies. Amazon communicated the same message in February when it announced the Ripper Street commission, but is yet to order any other shows. Instead, efforts have been made to secure first-run premium US drama, such as Halle Berry’s Extant.

Despite Amazon’s measured approach to original commissioning, Bird said creative talent would be “backed with the money needed to produce their vision”, as well as an “unrivalled level of promotional support around their shows”. He would not disclose the budget he has at his disposal.

Bird stressed, however, that Amazon is “not in a rush” to populate its service with original commissions, making clear that he is on the hunt for the “best ideas combined with the best talent”.

The Amazon executive said the platform is open to striking more co-production deals with broadcasters.

Ripper Street is partly funded by BBC1 and US cable channel BBC America, both of which will air the series next year.
