Peter Kosminsky

Kosminsky:I've met a veteran of some of the troops of the Palestine Mandate, he has  told me his story. He  felt pretty bitter, because there is no monument to honor the soldiers. He said he felt a bit like a Vietnam veteran, a personification of an embarrssing miscarriage. In hisstatement, I have found the basis of a certain conception of the Middle East.

Annegret H.: People who have survived, have been, . hidden by residents in samll houses at the beach  of Herzliya, the wet clothes were buried in the gardens ... so the British authorities sought were looking for to freshly dug places.... the locations are very autentisch ...so the old houses still look the same today.

Arte: The pictures at the beginning  are archive pictures of the liberation of the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen

Kosminsky: Overall, it took almost 11 years. I received a letter, which was from a veteran of the campaignof 1948. The research and production then took  8 years.

As already described, there was a letter from a veteran who was very bitter. The letter was actually a response to my film Warriors. At the end of the letter was very clear thatthe role of the 100,000 British soldiers stationed in Palestine is not recognized. He challenged me   thought, I  would never make a movie about it. So I started with a few veteransto conduct interviews and things got more interesting.


Kosminsky: My advice is that you have to figure out what you want to say. A lot of people don't think about their message, they just want to work for film. Go out into the world, spend time with people and work out what you want to say.

My Fimteam consisted almost entirely of Israelis and a few people from England. The few Israelis in the Palestinian team were very enthusiastic about the project and havebeen very supportive.

  This may sound unbelievable, but it was often true. The Jewish Brigade of the BritishArmy has illegally transported directly from the refugees camps to Trieste., From wherethey were transported by ship to Palestine, and just arrived in camp clothes.

I wanted to educate the British public. The opinion here is dominated by three ideas: 1, the conflict has existed since time eternal 2, he can not be solved 3, he has nothing to do with us. I wanted to show that it still has to do with us, GB was a colonial power, where it has had the responsibility. Previously, Jews and Arabs lived together quite peacefully.The conflict has not been since Biblical times.

The main characters are purely fictional, but I have had many interviews and read a lot.From these two sources I've taken  much trying to stay as close to reality.

The reactions were very mixed. The reviews were very good, probably the best I've got30 years in television. Public opinion was split about 50/50 and either very positive or very negative. There was hardly anything in between. Especially Zionist organizationshave complained about the film. The Internet was also heavily discussed, with some veryhardball.

We have had no problems of any kind of policy. While filming, we had some discussionswith the army, but nothing serious. Interestingly, however, was that  except of  ARTE no German  producer or television station  helped to finance the project. That wasdisappointing. There still seems to be difficult to exercise criticism of Israel in Germany.


Arte:The Israeli television has banned the broadcasting of the film.

Kosminsky: I was sad. Sad, because GB has left the country inno good condition. A state that has contributed to the conflict. GB should not have gone, , when the area was on the brink of war. of course. I felt sorry for the people too

Yes, I believe that peace is possible. The imbalance, of which this is Koflikt is characterized  is kept alive artificially by the United States . The U.S. keeps Israel, as it now exists, artificially alive .  The United States must change their behavior so that a solution can be found.

Nelson Mandela has been a role to be approached reverently, a difficult part and a career hurdle in some ways, like a royal figure in a Shakespearian play, one with fewer lines than the younger principals, but with richly poetic speeches – like the exiled Duke Senior in As You Like It. It is perhaps because Mandela himself entered the general conscience as a prisoner: someone who was able to impose his legend on the world in enforced and martyred inactivity. British film-maker Peter Kosminsky got into hot water a couple of years ago by proposing a film called Young Mandela, when Mandela was a fiery ANC soldier who very much did not believe in non-violence. The film has not yet been made, although Idris Elba's performance in Justin Chadwick's Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom touches on the subject.
