Other new dramas announced today by Channel 4 include a four-part adaptation of William Boyd's best-selling novel Any Human Heart

William Boyd has adapted his own novel, which tells the story of a fictional British writer-adventurer set against the backdrop of the 20th century. Lynn Horsford and Lee Morris will produce for Carnival Films, with Sally Woodward Gentle as executive producer. Filming is due to begin this winter.

To underline its increased commitment to drama, Channel 4 has announced new commissions for transmission in the second half of 2010 and beyond. These include: a four-part serial from BAFTA winning director Shane Meadows, We Were Faces; a four part adaptation of William Boyd's best selling novel Any Human Heart; and, a new four part Peter Kosminsky drama, Homeland - see separate release.

Acclaimed novelist William Boyd has adapted his best selling book, Any Human Heart, for Channel 4. Told through the intimate journals of Logan Mountstuart, a fictional British writer-adventurer and the drama's anti-hero, this ambitious 4 x 90' serial is the epic tale of an entire life - with all its randomness and unpredictability, ups, downs, triumphs and tragedies. Set against the backdrop of the 20th century, the drama captures the transformation from the arrogance, ambition and idealism of youth, to the calm contentment of old age.

The 4 x 90' serial written by Boyd and will be filmed this winter. Lynn Horsford (Boy A, The Mark of Cain) and Lee Morris (My Zinc Bed, The Damned United) will produce for Carnival Films, with Sally Woodward Gentle as Executive Producer. Casting to be announced.

Six hours, he revealed, was also the transmission time of this year’s television adaptation of his last big novel, Any Human Heart, which is about to begin shooting and will screen in the autumn.

Three actors will play the protagonist Logan Mountstuart: Jim Broadbent, Matthew MacFadyen and a younger man yet to be cast. Gasps of approval greeted the first two names, so the writer’s insistence that his screenplay is viewed as a “vivacious variant” of the much-loved book rather than a faithful adaptation was, perhaps, unnecessary.

Based on the betselling novel by William Boyd, Any Human Heart is a rollercoaster ride through one man's life. A trio of great actors portray the different life stages of hero Logan Mountstuart, a writer, lover, art dealer and spy living by his wits in the tumultuous 20th century.

Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent stars as Mountstuart in his dotage, with Matthew Macfadyen as the hero in his prime and Sam Claflin as the eager seducer in his impetuous youth.

A footloose writer takes part in the tumultuous 20th century, while getting to know Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. He also falls in love — over and over.

Also starring are Hayley Atwell, Kim Cattrall, Gillian Anderson, Tom Hollander, and Ed Stoppard.
