Lost in Karastan (U.K./Georgia; Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m. at the Imperial). “This man goes to a fictional place in Karastan,” Malina said. “Supposedly he’s there for a film festival. Then the great leader of Karastan conscripts him to make a movie — the epic of Karastani history. It’s quite amusing.”

Plus habile dans son humour absurde, le cinéaste britannique Ben Hopkins offre une comédie située dans un pays imaginaire d’Europe de l’Est, Lost in Karastan tourné en Géorgie. Un réalisateur paumé, une belle espionne, un président tyrannique, des rebelles cachés dans les montagnes et les steppes, des paysans ignorants dans leurs yourtes, un festival de films bidon et un tournage épique : tout s’entremêle dans cette satire déjantée du pouvoir et des aléas de la vie. Quelques très bons gags rachètent des segments plus convenus, grâce au scénario rebondissant, allergique à toute rectitude politique.

LOST IN KARASTAN—This bone-dry British comedy about Emil Forester, in which a blocked filmmaker (Matthew Macfadyen) accepts an invitation to a film festival in a small central Asian republic, was inspired by actual events in the careers of director Ben Hopkins and his friend Pawel Pawlikowski (whose Ida recently enjoyed an extended run in Buffalo theaters). That presumably does not extend to the part where our hero is hired by Karastan’s dictator to film his country’s national epic, a project that only Emil takes at face value. And I doubt that either Hopkins or Pawlikowski has ever made a film whose tag line (per one of Emil’s posters) calls it “electroshock therapy for the cinematically brain-dead empire.” You have to love filmmakers making fun of their own inability to recognize reality when a camera gets in the way.

A pleasant surprise is what I had with “Lost in Karastan” a British-Georgian co-production directed by Bob Hopkins and set in the fictitious Autonomous Republic of Karastan, where film director Emir Forester (Matthew Mcfadyen) has been invited to attend the first edition of its film festival during which a retrospective of his movies would be shown. Forester will be enchanted by the beautiful festival rep Chulpan (Myanna Buring) who is also very close to Karastan’s strong man. Forester will be asked by the Karastani president to direct an epic movie about his country’s national hero, Tanat, which is also the name of its most popular vodka. There would be a few misunderstandings and cultural shocks but the shooting goes under way, but then the political climate of a country whose people are increasingly tired of their dictator would interfere with the plans to make the epic and with Forester’s own projects at a very crucial period in his life. “Lost in Karastan” manages to take on a topic quite relevant these days—the role of these authoritarian rulers in some of the former Soviet republics—in the manner of a comedy that is not exempt from some drama and even move the audience to some reflection on the way cinema and popular culture may be used to manipulate an entire population.

Très amusant, le film Lost in Karastan était sans aucun doute un des coups de cœur du public. Le film raconte l’histoire d’un homme qui se rend au Karastan, un pays inventé de toute pièce, pour un festival de films. Une fois arrivé, les autorités du Karastan lui demandent de réaliser un film racontant l’histoire ahurissante du Karastan. Un vrai régal.

Es wurden bereits eine Vielzahl an Filmen auf Basis von völlig fiktiven Staaten gedreht, Sasha Baron Cohens “Der Diktator” hat dies wohl nahezu auf die Spitze getrieben. Hopkins Film nun jedoch mit jenem von Cohen gleich zu setzen wäre an dieser Stelle falsch, denn obwohl es in beiden Werken um einen unmöglichen Diktator geht, versucht Hopkins mit seinem Film am ehesten den Blick von außen auf ein totalitäres Regime zu werfen. Mit seiner Figur des hoffnungslosen Filmemachers Emil Forester versucht Hopkins den blauäugigen Blick auf ein Land zu werfen das gerade erst neu gegründet wurde, dass sich irgendwo in Russland befindet und versucht von Russland und China möglichst unabhängig zu werden. Dabei wird insbesondere am Anfang der Blick auf die Struktur des Landes geworfen, Forester durchstreift als eine Art Tourist mit seiner Kamera bewaffnet die Hauptstadt des Landes und sieht sich dabei nicht nur armen Menschen ausgesetzt, sondern ebenso einer weitestgehend zerstörten Infrastruktur.

There  already have been shot a number of films on the basis of entirely fictional states, Sasha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" has  carried it to extremes. However, to put Hopkins movie equal now with that of Cohen would be wrong at this point, because even though it tells about an impossible dictator in both works, Hopkins tries best with his film by putting  the view from outside to a totalitarian regime  .

With his character of the desperate filmmaker Emil Forester, Hopkins tries to throw a blue-eyed (innocent,naiv) glance on a country , that has been just newly founded , which is situated somewhere in Russia and attempts to become independant from Russia and China as much as possible.

Especially at the beginning  the glance is thrown on the structure of the country , Forester roams the capital of the country as a kind of tourist armed with his camera  and is  exposed not only to poor people, but also to a largely destroyed infrastructure.

Tag 5 Die Komödie persifliert die neuen Staaten im Osten mit ihren korrupten Diktaturen. Gleichzeitig ist sie eine Satire auf skurrile Filmfestivals in wenig bekannten Ländern

Der Londoner Filmregisseur Emil Forrester erlebt gerade nicht die beste Zeit. Er lässt sich von seiner Frau scheiden, die als Schauspielerin von Filmplakaten in der ganzen Welt auf ihn hinabschaut. Er ist knapp bei Kasse und kann seine Putzfrau nicht bezahlen. Ideen für die nächsten Filme bleiben ebenfalls aus. Die Einladung zu einem Filmfestival nach Paltschik ist da der willkommene Balsam für die kreative Seele in Not. Paltschik ist die Hauptstadt von Karastan, der neu gegründeten Republik im Kaukasus, die zuletzt von den Russen erobert wurde. Forrester wird herzlich empfangen, doch gleichzeitig kommt er sofort mit Korruption in Berührung. In der Stadt voller Panzer, Soldaten und zwielichtigen Gestalten versteht Emil wenig und wird eher dilettantisch verfolgt. Als er den Präsidenten trifft, bekommt er ein unerwartetes Angebot. Emil soll ein karastanisches Nationalepos drehen, um dem Land ein filmisches Gesicht zu geben – mit scheinbar unbegrenzter Finanzierung. Er nimmt an, nicht zuletzt aus Interesse an der mysteriösen Pressefrau, die er selbst kurzerhand verfolgt. Doch am Drehort gerät alles außer Kontrolle, wenn Rebellen versuchen, das Regime zu stürzen.

Matthew MacFayden, der aus zahlreichen Filmen und Serien bekannt ist, spielt sehr überzeugend einen verwirrten Regisseur, um den herum es immer unheimlicher wird. Auch Myanna Buring, die seine Begleiterin Tschulpan spielt, gibt sich sehr reizend als geschmeidige und mysteriöse Helferin. Welcome to Karastan arbeitet sich an vielen Klischees ab: Die jungen wilden Staaten im Osteuropa werden dabei genauso mokiert wie die europäischen Independent-Regisseure oder verrückte Stars aus Hollywood. Ein Vergleich mit Sasha Baron Coen wäre allerdings nicht ganz korrekt. Der Regisseur Ben Hopkins bedient sich eines subtileren Humors und schlägt niemals über die Stränge. Als eine komödiantische Abwechslung zu den dramatischen Ereignissen aus Osteuropa, die wir gerade in den Nachrichten sehen, ist diese Groteske sehr zu empfehlen.

Matthew MacFadyen, who is known from numerous films and television series, plays very convincingly a confused director, around which everything is more and more scary. [...] A comparison with Sasha Baron Co(h)en, however, would not be entirely correct. The director Ben Hopkins uses a subtle humor and never kicks over the traces. As a comic alternation to the dramatic events in Eastern Europe, which we currently are watching in the news, this grotesque is highly recommended.

A droll dark comedy about a well-meaning film director who finds himself out of his depth when he gets roped into making a film about there of a fictional Eastern European country, the engagingly made Lost In Karastan is a film punctuated by nice performances (from Matthew Macfadyen and MyAnna Buring especially) and subtly playful moments of humour.

Matthew Macfadyen convinces as a man increasingly out of his depth while MyAnna Buring is charismatic and suitably enigmatic as a women who always knows more then she ever lets on.

“Perdido em Karastan” de Ben Hopkins

A história é surpreendente por conseguir torna-se mais densa e envolvente. Começa como uma comédia e termina como um suspense, quase um filme de ação. Karastan é um país que poderia existir facilmente e o modo exagerado que se retrata é bem definido e engraçado como se fosse algum país do Oriente Médio ou qualquer país historicamente corrupto. As referências cinematográficas usadas pelos diálogos são pontuais a trama. O suspense é aplicado de maneira leve, pois o humor torna o desenrolar da história agradável. Matthew Macfadyen (Emil Forester) demonstra carisma a um personagem que realmente precisava. As reviravoltas e as minúcias são bem constituídas que faz a história ser fluente e conseguir fazer críticas a tópicos como a corrupção, a lavagem de dinheiro, aos regimes ditatoriais e até propriamente a indústria de cinema numa maneira de rir e também refletir.
